Living In Uxbridge, Ontario - Has Any Body Seen Charley's Aunt

No Charley's Aunt is not Missing! 

 "Charley's Aunt"is a play being presented by OnStage Uxbridge April 7th - 9th and again April 14th - 16th at 7:30 with matinee performance on Sunday April 10th at the Music Hall.

First performed at the Theatre Royal in 1892, it is a late Victorian farce about two oxford scholars who convince a friend to pose as "Charley's Aunt"  who then watches over them as they attempt to woo their young ladies.

"Charley's Aunt"  had an original london run of 1,466 performances breaking all historic records for plays of any kind.

Uxbridge is a Green Belt community located just 1 hour North East of the Greater Toronto Area. The Uxbridge Half Marathon takes full advantage of this with it's, 10K Trail Run/Walk and  5K Trails Run/Walk that boasts beautiful scenic trails, roadways & cart paths. 

  • The Uxbridge Half Marathon Run is limited to 500 registrants.
  • The Uxbridge 10K and 5K Trail Run will be limited to 300 registrants for each distance.
  • The Uxbridge 10K and 5K Trail Walk is limited to 100 registrants for each distance.
  • The Kids Dash is limited to 100 registrants.

All entrants in the Uxbridge Half Marathon events 16yrs and over will be entered automatically into the $5000 Diamond Draw, just remember you need to be present at the Diamond Draw to be eligible.

Dragonflies - Dragon Boat Races Registration - The Boat Is Full

The Registration for the Dragonflies Dragon Boat Festival closed early this year with applications still arriving after the maximum number of registrants was reached.

The 56 teams and over 1400 paddlers that competed in the 2010 festival raised more than $153,000 in pledges and donations. This popular festival is a fund raiser by cancer survivors for four local hospitals, Ross Memorial Hospital in Lindsay, Lakeridge Health Centre in Port Perry, Uxbridge Cottage Hospital, and the R.S. McLaughlin Durham Regional Cancer Centre in Oshawa

When I First Entered Real Estate .....

..... a sign on the lawn and a small add in the local paper was the only primary marketing you did. Some added door hangers in the neighbourhood suggesting the neighbours help pick their new neighbours by telling friends and relatives about the home. Of course there was always the open house  for agents the day the listing came out and the odd open house for potential buyers. The only way people could reach you was the office phone and only real estate agents had access to the listing sheets that came out each day.

Jump Forward to Today .....

..... and you practically need an IT person working full time to keep you and your marketing on the cutting edge.

Today we have instant access to homes as soon as the listing agents upload them. The simple cell phone and pager have been replaced with smart phones with all their apps. It's no longer enough to rely on the national realtor.ca web site, and you probably have at least one or perhaps several of your own web sites, and blogs. In addition to your own social media outlets you have a litany of service providers that push your listings out through their web sites and social media platforms.

Your listings can be seen by way of virtual tours that run 24/7 on demand on the Internet

You have had to learn about SEO and web site analytics and whether or not all that money you spent was enough to get your web site in the top ten of the search engine results.

You are learning the do's' and donts, the when and why's of blogging. You've discovered that QR codes are cute but now you have to learn how to best use them in your marketing.

Do you monitor your resources consumption rates.

Hydro, Water, Fuel are all consumables that we use on a daily basis sometimes never giving a thought about the cost to our planet. Over the years we have often looked at our consumption and looked for ways to reduce that consumption. Looking at a five year period of our hydro consumption we realize that conservation plays a role but is not the only influence.

 

For example looking at the chart below you can tell when our household membership became smaller. Our daily average consumption dropped dramatically from 2004 to 2005 along with the short term rolling average while the longer term rolling averages dropped much slower.

From 2006 to 2008 Our hydro consumption continued to drop as we changed out lights for higher efficiency ones. The spike in the 3 month rolling average in 2007 was an indication of things to come as Barrie was home a lot more during this time period and things like lights, TV's and computers were turned on for longer periods of time.

2008 saw a little improvement while 2009 saw a spike in our usage, with Barrie now retired,  due to higher use of the air conditioning. 2010 saw the downward trend continue as we were able to get away a fair bit during the summer

The ArtsCan Circle was inspired by the work of Mike Stevens, a multi-talented harmonica player who had been traveling to Native communities in Labrador, at his own expense, to share his music and distribute hundreds of harmonicas in an effort to help his young listeners discover music for themselves.

An independent, volunteer-run group the ArtsCan Circle is working to link creative artists with Native youth at risk in Canada. Their hope is to encourage self-esteem amongst Native youth in isolated communities through a cooperative exploration of the arts.

The ArtsCan Circle organizes on-going visits by musicians and artists who share their creative resources. Several volunteers have had the opportunity to travel to the two Innu communities of Nataushsish and Sheshatshiu in Labrador where Mike started this whole idea. Nataushish is the re-located Davis Inlet, a community widely recognized for its problems. The children truly appreciate the chance to make music and, at least for a little while, escape the troubles of their daily lives.

The Snow Is Almost Gone But Some Streams And Rivers Are Still Very Swollen

Keep Your Children Away From Swollen Streams and Rivers

While the snow may be all but gone around Uxbridge the Streams and rivers are still very dangerous. The water level where these videos were taken back in 08 rose close to 1 foot overnight (Wed April 02nd) and likely would have risen even more if the temperature had not dropped.

It's Amazing How Much
Force There Is in A small River?

The 25+ foot tree in the water was washed down river and through the dam. It became lodged on an island in the river that was under about 1 foot of water.

Last year three full size telephone poles that had formed a bridge somewhere up stream came down through the dam. This year two of them were washed away while the third remains lodged in the pond below the dam.

 

Normal Flow is about 3 to 4 inches in depth over the dam.

While the current flow through the dam is about 1 foot. The Flow through the dam at the time of these videos was about  about 3 feet in depth.
